16 True Meaning of Love

Everette walked back toward the village in turmoil after Morisa had scorned his love. He lay down in the tall wildflowers and watched the clouds drift by overhead. Morisa had effectively turned his life upside down ever since she had arrived. Well, no more. He never wanted to see her again.

He thought back over their conversation, trying to remember exactly what she’d said, and became irritated all over again.

Morisa came into view above him; her shadow cast across his body. He was glad he wore his sunglasses, so she couldn’t see the pain in his eyes.

“Can we talk?” she asked.

“How did you find me? I thought I was hidden in these flowers.”

She shrugged, looked away, then back at him. “I felt your turmoil.” She sat down beside him. “I’m sorry I hurt you. We’re so different.”

“Too different. Tomorrow we must both return to our own worlds.”

“I can’t go back to the monastery.”

He braced himself on his elbow. “Then return to your parents’ home.”

She looked down, twisting her hands in her lap. “I’ll miss you.”

“I doubt it.”

“We have a deep inner connection that will still be there when I leave.”

“It’ll fade with time. Were you happy at the monastery?”

She lay next to him. “I never thought about happiness, just the admiration I’d have as a priestess. I’ll probably never be accepted into the order now. I’ve failed the head priestess.” She picked a flower and idly ran it across his forehead and cheek, and then lightly across his lips.

He folded his hands behind his head and watched her. Her face had grown soft and unguarded and her long hair fell across him. She put the palms of her hands on his chest and leaned over him so her mouth was close to his.

“Teach me about love, Everette,” she said softly.

“What do you want to know?”

“About love between a man and a woman.” She kissed him lightly and he kept his hands behind his head with effort. “Did you like that?” she asked in a throaty whisper.

“Yes.”

Morisa took off his sunglasses, then kissed him again, a long, leisurely kiss. Her breasts rubbed sensuously against his chest and her bare legs pressed against his. She finally sat up on top of him so that she was straddling his hips. “I like it when we kiss too.” Her mouth met his again and he tumbled her over onto her back, coming down on top of her.

The wind whispered across the tops of the tall flowers and the sun grew brighter while the clouds retreated and his body became heated with desire. He felt her desperation in the way she kissed him, and knew she was distressed that they would soon be separated. His arousal was growing keenly with her body so lightly clad under him and he knew he had to end things before they got out of hand.

He moved off her and tucked some wildflowers behind her ear. “You never did tell me why you look flat-chested in a robe.
